AirDrop: Share Files Instantly Between Mac and iPhone

How to do it

  1. Prepare both devices: Make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are turned on for both your Mac and iPhone. Keep them within 10 meters of each other.

  2. Select and share: On the sending device, select the file, photo, or link you want to share. Tap the Share button (the square with an upward arrow).

  3. Choose AirDrop: In the sharing menu, tap AirDrop. Your other device should appear within a few seconds.

  4. Pick the recipient: Tap on the target device. The file transfers immediately.

  5. Accept on the receiver: Transfers between your own devices signed in to the same Apple Account are accepted automatically. Other people see a confirmation prompt; current systems may also require an AirDrop code for non-contacts.

Why this helps

  • Both devices need Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on to start; they do not need to share the same Wi-Fi network.
  • The transfer is encrypted.
  • If you leave Bluetooth or Wi-Fi range after the transfer starts, current systems can continue it over the internet.

Security tip

Use Contacts Only or Everyone for 10 Minutes instead of leaving reception open. This reduces unwanted requests in public places.

Tip: AirDrop also works between different people's Apple devices β€” great for sharing photos at events or family gatherings.
